Is the coffee coming out of your coffee machine dripping? Or is your cup of coffee watery? You've probably tried a lot of things to get your coffee right, but have you looked at the grind level? We are happy to explain why the right grind is essential for the perfect cup of coffee. Read our blog and find out how to easily adjust the grind size on your coffee machine using the instructions for the widely used DeLonghi Magnifica S coffee machine.

How does the grind size affect your coffee?

The wrong grind level can cause problems when brewing your cup of coffee. So you can adjust the grind size to a finer grind, a coarser grind or in between. The grind level is usually set in the middle by default, so it can be adjusted to your liking.

Coffee ground too finely

When the coffee is ground too finely, less water passes through the ground coffee and creates a stronger coffee flavour. This can lead to your coffee tasting too bitter. Finely ground coffee slows down the water flow. Does your coffee only come out of the coffee spout drop by drop? Or is your coffee too bitter? Then adjust the grind level to a coarser grind (higher number).

Coffee ground too coarsely

With a coarser grind, the water flows through the ground coffee faster. If the coffee is ground too coarsely, this can produce watery (weak) coffee. To overcome this problem, adjust the grind to a finer setting (lower number).

How to easily adjust the grind level in your coffee machine

Adjusting the grind level in your coffee machine is very easy with the following 3 steps. Here we are using a DeLonghi Magnifica S coffee machine.

NOTE: It is important to adjust the grind level only while grinding your machine's beans AND with a small adjustment at a time, otherwise you will damage the coffee grinder.

Step 1: preparation

Make sure the machine is switched on, there are coffee beans in the bean container and the machine is ready to use. Next, open the bean container by removing the lid. You will see a knob to set the grind size.

Step 2: adjust the grind level

Make a cup of coffee or espresso so your machine starts grinding beans. Then turn to a finer grind (lower number) or a coarser grind (higher number) while your machine grinds. Make a small adjustment per grind, e.g. one click finer or coarser.

Step 3: test & taste

Make a few cups of coffee and test and taste for each cup to see if the desired result is achieved. Sometimes it takes a few cups before you notice a difference. Then keep making small adjustments as described in steps two and three until you have your cup of coffee exactly the way you like it.

We recommend not adjusting the grind of your coffee too often and not making too many changes each time you use it. This is to avoid damage to your machine.
